After a very blissful morning meditation, I take leave of the Ganges, and bid farewell to Beehm, Hari and the gang at the Hotel Ganges Kinares. It's only a two hour taxi ride to Mussoorie, passing through the city of Dehra Dun, and the comical highlight of the trip was the traffic of Dehra Dun having to negotiate around a large herd of water buffalo heading down main street.

Thinking of Van Gogh in Mahabalipuram

The ride to Mahabalipuram hugged the eastern coastline of India, passing through many small villages. It was a beautiful ride, palm trees, rice fields, cow and goat herds, blue skies. Picturesque. Though Mahabalipuram is only 90 miles from Chennai, it still takes 3 hours, since these taxis really don't go over 50 miles an hour. But the road was excellent, a new highway built with funds from the World Bank. No bumps, potholes or broken sections. Such a treat. But we did at one point cross another major highway leading to Bangalore, filled with trucks, buses, cars, taxis, etc, backed up for miles, another definition of hell.

The Shatabdi Express is one of India's more famous express trains, leaving Delhi for points north and south. The Indian railway system is humongous, and apparently the railway employs two million people in one capacity or another. Think of that payroll nightmare.

Tranquil Backwaters of Kerala

The people of the villages seemed very happy and content, and I thought that these folks are born and will live and die in these little villages - so many different karmic destinies in the world! I noticed a wild beauty to these folks, as if they're still in touch with strong elemental forces of the earth which shines out of their faces, especially in the children.
